At Promoting Independence in Older Adults, our mission is to help older adults remain safe, confident, and independent in their homes through personalized evaluation, meaningful goal-setting, and compassionate, strength-based occupational therapy.

Organization Purpose

Promoting Independence in Older Adults provides occupational therapy home services focused on helping older adults (65+) age safely in place. Through holistic evaluation and personalized interventions, we address physical, cognitive, and environmental barriers to independence.

    • Falls can lead to serious health problems and an inability to remain safe in your home. 

    • Risk factors for falls include having any of the following conditions (NCOA): 

      • Prior falls

      • Vision loss

      • Hearing loss

      • Lower body weakness

      • Balance deficits

      • Medications

      • Chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes

      • Fear of falling

      • Home hazards

  • Yes! The good news is that falls can be prevented, and reduced by up to 38%, through a comprehensive assessment by a trained healthcare professional, such as an occupational therapist. Unlike general assessments provided by adaptive equipment vendors, Occupationals Therapists address the home environment, mobility, balance, and daily routines to create a personalized prevention plan.

  • While we do not bill insurance. Invoices are provided so you can submit them to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

  • Promoting Independence in Older Adults serves locations within 30 miles of San Marcos.

  • You will be provided with a detailed report of any personal and/or home factors which may place you at risk for a fall. You will be provided with resources for purchase of adaptive equipment and other fall prevention resources as applicable. Lastly, you will be given the opportunity to schedule 1-3 follow-up training sessions with the occupational therapist.

  • Often clients may need to purchase adaptive equipment for the home, or learn new methods to performing familiar daily living tasks. Clients may require the expertise of an occupational therapist to determine the best solutions to make their home safe. Occupational therapists will work collaboratively with you to discuss your goals and need for additional follow-up training sessions.

  • The initial evaluation is designed to provide you and your loved ones a comprehensive review of any and all factors which could contribute to fall risk, and to identify key factors for intervention. Once you have reviewed the report provided, clients will determine which goals they’d like to address first and if they would like further assistance from an occupational therapist to achieve their goals. If both parties determine more sessions are needed, training sessions will be set-up. Training sessions may include instruction in proper use of adaptive equipment, organizational “tips” to prevent falls and/or new, safer methods of performing familiar daily living activities.

  • The occupational therapist will provide written recommendations and a list of potential vendors for purchase and installation of adaptive equipment. Our services however, do not include the purchase and/or installation of any needed equipment.
